Coventry boss Lampard questions VAR decision after Tottenham Hotspur’s Marmoush goal

Frank Lampard has questioned the decision to allow Omar Marmoush’s goal to stand after Tottenham’s 3-1 victory over Coventry City, admitting he expected VAR to intervene over a suspected elbow in the build-up.

Marmoush restored Tottenham’s advantage shortly after Jack Rudoni had brought Coventry level, but the goal was not without controversy.

The Spurs forward appeared to catch Coventry defender Milan van Ewijk in the face with his elbow before finishing the move, prompting questions over whether the goal should have been disallowed.

The incident was reviewed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), but officials cleared the goal, allowing Tottenham to maintain their lead and eventually secure a 3-1 victory.

For Lampard, the Coventry manager, the outcome was surprising. He believed the video review would result in the goal being ruled out, although he stopped short of launching a lengthy public criticism of the officials.

Speaking during his post-match press conference, Lampard said: “I did think that, I thought VAR would cancel it.

“You have to be careful how you choose your words. I felt that. That is all I’ll say about it. We will analyse the game back.”

The comments reflected Lampard’s frustration with the decision at a crucial moment in the contest, particularly after Coventry had worked their way back into the game through Rudoni’s equaliser.

Marmoush’s goal proved significant because it restored Tottenham’s lead and shifted the pressure back onto the home side. Rather than taking advantage of their equaliser, Coventry found themselves chasing the game again after the disputed incident.

Although the VAR review did not lead to an overturn, the decision is likely to remain a talking point among Coventry supporters, given the apparent contact with Van Ewijk before the finish.

The key question surrounding the incident is whether the contact was sufficient to constitute an offence in the build-up to the goal. However, the officials’ decision to uphold the goal meant Tottenham were able to continue without the setback of having their advantage cancelled.

Lampard’s measured response also suggested he wanted to review the footage before offering a more detailed assessment. His insistence that the team would analyse the game again leaves open the possibility of further internal discussion about the incident and its impact on the match.

For Tottenham, the result delivered a 3-1 victory, with Marmoush’s strike helping the side regain control after Coventry had threatened to make the contest more difficult.

For Coventry, however, the disputed goal added another layer of frustration to a match in which Rudoni’s equaliser had briefly offered renewed hope.

Lampard may have chosen his words carefully, but his central point was unmistakable: he expected VAR to intervene, and the decision to let Marmoush’s goal stand left him questioning the outcome of the review.
