Mikel Arteta has praised Arsenal’s mentality and attacking ambition after the Gunners battled to a thrilling 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League.
Arsenal delivered an impressive performance in Munich, matching the German giants’ intensity in a contest that featured relentless pressing, aggressive defending and attacking football from both sides.
Despite losing Bukayo Saka to injury early in the game, the Premier League side showed resilience to recover from a second-half deficit and secure a valuable result away from home.
Arteta was particularly impressed by the quality and determination his players displayed against one of Europe’s most formidable opponents, believing Arsenal demonstrated their ability to compete at the highest level.
“It was an incredible match to watch. It was tough to go through it because the margins are so small. It was two teams that want to put under pressure constantly, everything is man-to-man, and two teams that want to attack, they want to be dominant.
“I’m really impressed with the mindset and the quality that the team showed right from the beginning. To do that in this stadium against this team and to do what we’ve done right from the beginning was impressive.”
However, Arsenal’s performance came at a potential cost, with Saka forced off after picking up an injury during the contest.
The England international’s early withdrawal was a significant concern for Arteta, who admitted that the initial signs were worrying, although the full extent of the problem remained unclear.
“Really bad news. I don’t know the extent of the injury, but it’s certainly not something small.”
Saka’s departure forced Arsenal to adjust their attacking options, with Eberechi Eze coming on as his replacement. The substitute made an immediate impact, opening the scoring for the visitors and giving the Gunners an early advantage.
Bayern responded before the interval and struck again after the restart to turn the game around, putting Arsenal under pressure as they searched for another equaliser.
Arteta’s men refused to fold, however, and Declan Rice produced a superb finish to restore parity and ensure Arsenal left Munich with a share of the points.
The Arsenal manager was pleased with how his players responded to adversity, highlighting the contributions of the substitutes and the team’s determination to keep pushing forward even after Bayern moved ahead.
“The team reacted incredibly well to again, grab the game, the finishers came in, started to make a difference as well, scored a beautiful goal,” Arteta added.
“And the team wants to get the ball and attack to go and win the game. And we were very close to do it right at the end. So, a lot to take, because I’ve seen a lot of teams come here for three years and get absolutely battered, top teams. So, big credit to what the team and the boys have done tonight.”
The late pressure nearly produced an even more memorable result for Arsenal, who continued searching for a winner instead of settling for a draw against the Bundesliga champions.
For Arteta, the performance offered encouragement beyond the final score. Arsenal showed they could withstand Bayern’s pressure, respond to setbacks and remain committed to their attacking principles in a demanding European away fixture.
The draw also underlined the fine margins that separate victory from defeat at this level, with both teams displaying the intensity and quality expected of Champions League contenders.
However, Saka’s injury will remain a major concern for Arsenal as they assess his condition. The winger’s importance to the team’s attacking threat means any extended absence could present Arteta with a significant selection challenge.
While the 2-2 result gives Arsenal plenty of positives to take away from Munich, the immediate focus will be on Saka’s recovery and maintaining the momentum generated by a determined performance against Bayern.
