Alonso backs Mike Penders after Chelsea error ahead of Liverpool clash

Xabi Alonso has thrown his support behind Mike Penders after the Chelsea goalkeeper endured a difficult Premier League debut against Tottenham Hotspur, confirming the 21-year-old will retain his place for the Carabao Cup clash with Liverpool.

Penders endured a mixed afternoon during Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat to Tottenham at Stamford Bridge. The Belgian produced important first-half saves to deny Omar Marmoush and Mathys Tel, showing glimpses of his ability before a costly second-half mistake turned the contest against the hosts.

Under pressure from Jan Paul van Hecke, Penders scored an own goal that handed Tottenham the lead. The visitors later doubled their advantage to secure a rare victory at Stamford Bridge, leaving Chelsea to reflect on a frustrating performance.

Despite the setback, Alonso has made it clear that he will not abandon his goalkeeper after one difficult moment. The Chelsea manager believes mistakes are part of football and insists the responsibility for defeat must be shared across the team.

With Liverpool next on the schedule in the Carabao Cup, Alonso has confirmed that Penders will start in goal, giving the young shot-stopper an immediate opportunity to respond to the disappointment.

“It’s part of the business; you need to deal with mistakes and we keep confidence in Mike and he will be in goal against Liverpool,” the Blues manager said.

Alonso also stressed that Chelsea must approach setbacks collectively, rather than placing the blame on individual players. The Spaniard acknowledged that even managers make mistakes and insisted that everyone at the club has a responsibility to learn from the defeat.

“We win and we lose together and it’s part of the job to deal with mistakes, myself as well as everyone.

“We support Mike and Geo (Quenda) as well, the guys starting their first [Premier League] games. He will want to prove he can do better – and we also have to show that.”

The manager’s comments underline Chelsea’s commitment to supporting young players as they adjust to the demands of senior football. Penders and Geo Quenda are among those experiencing the pressure that comes with making their first Premier League starts, where individual errors can quickly attract attention.

For Penders, the Liverpool fixture offers a chance to put the Tottenham disappointment behind him. His first-half interventions demonstrated his capacity to contribute, but the own goal will inevitably make his response a major talking point heading into the cup tie.

Alonso, however, appears determined to judge his goalkeeper beyond one costly incident. By confirming Penders as his starter against Liverpool, the Chelsea boss has offered a clear show of faith while challenging both the player and the wider squad to improve.

Chelsea will now look to turn that backing into a stronger performance, with the Carabao Cup providing an immediate test of their ability to respond after defeat. For Penders, the message from his manager is unmistakable: the mistake has happened, but the opportunity to bounce back remains.
