Van Dijk issues Mohamed Salah warning as Liverpool’s new stars step up

Virgil van Dijk has admitted Liverpool face a major challenge replacing Mohamed Salah’s influence, insisting the Egyptian’s extraordinary contribution over several seasons will be difficult for any winger to match.

The Liverpool captain also paid tribute to former Anfield favourites Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, while challenging the club’s current players to step forward and establish their own legacy.

Van Dijk’s comments underline the scale of Liverpool’s transition as the club looks beyond the era defined by Salah, Mane and Firmino. While their achievements remain a benchmark for supporters, the Dutch defender believes dwelling on the past would undermine the mentality required to compete at the highest level.

“I think it is the reality. What Mo [Mohamed Salah] has done for so many years as a winger, I don’t think anyone can replicate that,” Liverpool skipper Virgil van Dijk said.

“Hopefully it is going to happen but what he did was incredible. The same goes with Sadio [Mane] and Bobby [Roberto Firmino].

“Hopefully that is going to happen again and that is what we work for but now it is time for others and others have to step up.

“We can always think it was better back in the day but that is not the mentality that it should be at a club like Liverpool and I don’t feel it has ever been.

“The club will always move on at a certain point and there are always players who will shine and perform for the club.

“It is down to these players who are here now to show it every three or four days.

“The second goal was class but there are plenty of moments already this season that they have been very good.

“At a club like Liverpool you have to do it every three or four days. That is always the challenge, but it is a nice challenge. I’m pretty confident that it is going to be fine.”

Liverpool’s latest victory has strengthened their position in the Premier League, moving them into the top four after another disciplined display. The result also delivered their fourth clean sheet of the season, underlining the defensive improvements made by the team.

With their only defeat coming at home against Manchester City, Liverpool have continued to build momentum while adapting to changes across the squad. Their evolving defensive structure has attracted particular attention, with Ronald Araujo making an immediate impression after arriving on loan from Barcelona and taking up a role on the right side of the defence.

Another encouraging development has been the form of Jérémy Jacquet. The 21-year-old joined from Rennes in a £60 million ($80 million) deal and is already showing signs of becoming an astute addition to Liverpool’s squad.

Van Dijk has been impressed by the young defender’s progress but believes there is still plenty of room for improvement.

“He [Jacquet] is doing very well,” van Dijk added.

“He just has to keep going and let’s see where the ceiling will be. I don’t think it is there yet, so keep going.”

The Liverpool captain’s message reflects the balance the club must strike between respecting its successful past and building for the future. Salah, Mane and Firmino helped establish a formidable attacking era, but Van Dijk wants the current squad to create its own identity rather than chase old memories.

Consistency will be central to that process. Liverpool’s ambitions demand strong performances every few days, not occasional flashes of quality, and Van Dijk believes the players now have an opportunity to prove they can meet that standard.

With results improving and new arrivals beginning to settle, Liverpool have reasons for optimism. The next challenge is turning that promise into sustained success while ensuring the club’s next generation can carry its winning tradition forward.
