Jaissle demands faster learning after Newcastle United’s Everton defeat

Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle has demanded greater maturity and sharper decision-making from his players after their 3-1 Carabao Cup defeat to Everton, describing the loss as a familiar reflection of their struggles this season.

Despite dominating large spells of the contest and registering 28 shots at Hill Dickinson Stadium, Newcastle were punished for defensive lapses and a lack of clinical finishing. James Garner, Hayden Hackney and Thierno Barry scored to give Everton a commanding three-goal advantage before Dan Burn grabbed a late consolation for the visitors.

The result left Jaissle frustrated, particularly because he felt Newcastle created enough opportunities to secure a much better outcome. However, the manager believes his side’s inability to manage dangerous situations and convert chances continues to undermine their performances.

Reflecting on the defensive mistakes that contributed to the defeat, Jaissle said: “We lack in the clinical approach to solve the situations; just think about the first one.”

The Newcastle boss was particularly disappointed with the manner in which his team conceded the opening goal, insisting the players should have dealt with the situation before it developed into a scoring opportunity.

“This is again a no-risk zone where we clear the ball and nothing happens, and a couple of seconds later you can see the goal out of nothing.

“These are the things we need to learn quickly. We had many occasions, many opportunities to score, big chances as well, but in their box we need to be more clinical to get a different result.”

Although the scoreline suggested a comfortable evening for Everton, Jaissle maintained that Newcastle’s overall display was not as poor as the final result indicated. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that individual errors proved decisive and left his side with too much work to do.

For the manager, the immediate challenge is ensuring his players learn from those mistakes rather than allowing the same problems to continue affecting their results.

“We need to avoid these mistakes, be more mature, be more clinical in these situations,” he added.

Jaissle also rejected the idea that Newcastle’s youthful squad should be given extra time to develop before being held accountable for costly errors. While recognising that the team is still learning, he insisted the demands of the season leave little room for repeated mistakes.

“This is a learning process, but you don’t get the time. We need to learn fast, especially with these young lads. Being a young team is not an excuse any more.”

Newcastle must now respond quickly after another damaging result. With their Carabao Cup campaign over, Jaissle will expect his players to turn their frustration into improved performances, particularly in the two areas he identified as decisive: defensive discipline and clinical finishing.
