Moyes backs Everton decision as Jack Grealish absence raises questions

David Moyes has declined to explain Jack Grealish’s absence from Everton’s 3-1 victory over Newcastle United, insisting the decision was made by the club and that he fully supports it.

The Everton manager faced questions about the England international after his side secured an impressive win over Newcastle. However, Moyes was reluctant to provide details about the situation, making it clear that the club was responsible for addressing enquiries surrounding the 31-year-old.

Asked about Grealish’s absence, Moyes said: “It’s something I don’t really want to speak too much about. It’s a club decision, so I support the decision.

“The club are the people you should go to if you’re looking for more information.”

Everton’s press officer subsequently intervened to bring further questions about the winger to a close, leaving his immediate status unclear.

Moyes was also asked whether Grealish would be available for Everton’s next Premier League fixture against Newcastle at St James’ Park on Monday, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.

The manager refused to offer any indication of his selection plans, keeping his cards close to his chest ahead of the return meeting between the two sides.

“I’d never give any team news away,” he said.

While Grealish’s absence attracted attention, Moyes was more interested in highlighting the collective response from his players. The Everton boss praised the standards within the dressing room, insisting the squad remained focused despite the uncertainty surrounding one of their players.

The 3-1 victory over Newcastle provided evidence of that unity, with Moyes particularly pleased that the team maintained its approach and delivered on the pitch.

“The one thing about Everton and what they’ve got is they’ve got really good values behind it,” Moyes said.

“All the players stand up to the values, accept the values Everton put out there, what we want from them on the pitch and off the pitch, and from that point of view, the players done a brilliant job tonight.”

The result gives Everton a positive platform heading into their next meeting with Newcastle, but Grealish’s situation remains a talking point. Moyes has made his position clear: he backs the club’s decision and will not disclose further information.

With another Premier League encounter against Newcastle approaching, attention will now turn to whether the winger returns to contention or remains unavailable. For now, Everton’s manager is keeping the focus on the team rather than the questions surrounding Grealish.
