Genoa part ways with Patrick Viera after winless start to season

Arsenal legend Patrick Viera has left his role as manager of Italian Serie A outfit Genoa by mutual consent, following a poor start to the season.

The Ex-France international joined the club in November 2024 and helped steer them away from relegation in the 2024-25 campaign after winning eight of his 26 matches in charge.

The Red and Blues are currently bottom of the league standings, having amassed just three points from their first nine league matches.

They have recorded three draws and suffered six defeats as they remain one of the four teams yet to pick up a league win in the Italian top-flight this season.

In a statement released on Saturday, the club confirmed that the 49-year-old had left his role at the club by mutual agreement after a disappointing start to the season.

“Genoa CFC announces that Patrick Vieira is no longer the coach of the first team … the technical leadership of the first team has been entrusted on an interim basis to Roberto Murgita, assisted by Domenico Criscito.

“The club would like to thank the coach and his staff for the dedication and professionalism they have shown throughout their work and wishes them all the best for their future careers”, the club statement revealed.

Viera’s first managerial position was in the Major League Soccer with New York City FC, before moving on to Nice, Crystal Palace and Strasbourg.

This season, the club’s only victories came in the Coppa Italia, while they have suffered defeats in five of their last six games in the league.

The Italian club have also scored the least amount of goals in the league, alongside Parma, scoring only four times from nine matches.

Genoa will begin the search for a new manager in coming days, with Roberto Murgita expected to take charge of their league game at Sassuolo on Monday.
