WSL apologises to Spurs after controversial TikTok cup draw moment

The Women’s Super League has issued a formal apology to Tottenham Hotspur after a controversial moment during the League Cup draw on Tuesday night.

The draw, streamed live on the WSL’s official TikTok page, featured online personality GK Barry and Portsmouth midfielder Ella Rutherford.

However, the broadcast quickly sparked backlash after GK Barry made a crude reference when Tottenham’s number was drawn.

She shouted, “What do you think of Tottenham?”, a chant commonly used by rival fans.

Tottenham raised concerns immediately. The WSL then contacted the club to address the issue directly and offered an apology.

There was also a brief moment of confusion during the draw. GK Barry accidentally pulled out a ball, dropped it back into the bowl, and then selected it again.

The WSL confirmed that an adjudicator was present and is satisfied the draw remained fair and accurate.

The decision to host the draw on TikTok was part of the league’s push to reach a younger and more diverse audience.

However, the incident has prompted the WSL to rethink how future draws will be handled.

Despite the storm, the WSL insists the integrity of the process was not compromised.

But the moment has certainly sparked debate across the women’s football community.
