Real Madrid suffer Alexander-Arnold injury setback

Real Madrid have suffered a major injury blow as Trent Alexander-Arnold will miss up to two months with a quad injury.

The England defender made his third consecutive start in the Spanish La Liga in the 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday, but came off minutes into the second half with injury.

The right-back had provided the assist for Kylian Mbappe’s opener, finding the forward with a brilliant cross-field pass in the seventh minute, with the Frenchman applying the finishing touch.

However, he will now miss up to two months of action with his latest injury having recently returned from another injury that sidelined him earlier in the campaign.

“Following tests carried out today on our player Trent Alexander-Arnold by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a muscle injury in the rectus femoris of his left quadriceps. His recovery will be monitored”, the club revealed in a statement.

The summer arrival from Liverpool could now miss up to 11 matches for Real Madrid with his return date now set for next year.

Kylian Mbappe (2) and Eduardo Camavinga were both on the scoresheet for Los Blancos in their comfortable win over Bilbao on Wednesday.

France captain Mbappe opened the scoring early in the game, before Camavinga added a second before halftime.

Mbappe got his second of the game and 62nd goal of the year in the second half as Xabi Alonso’s men grabbed their first league win in four outings.

A run of three straight draws had seen them surrender the lead at the top of the standings to champions Barcelona, who now lead the table by a single point.

Real Madrid face Celts Vigo in the La Liga on Sunday, before a crucial UEFA Champions League match against Manchester City next Wednesday.
