Cucurella: Everton showdown could shape Chelsea’s season

Marc Cucurella has underlined the importance of Chelsea’s home clash with Everton.

The Spaniard believes the fixture could shape the Blues’ season at a crucial stage.

Chelsea head into the game sitting fifth in the Premier League table.

They are one point and two places above Everton, with the standings tightly packed.

After an unbeaten November, results have dipped.

Defeats away to Leeds United and in the Champions League, plus a draw at Bournemouth, have slowed momentum.

As a result, Chelsea now trail league leaders Arsenal by eight points.

They sit six behind Manchester City, five off Aston Villa and one adrift of Crystal Palace.

At the same time, the margin for error is slim. Just six points separate the Blues from 14th-placed Brentford.

“It is very important [for us to get back to winning ways],” Cucurella revealed. “For me, this is one of the most important games of the season because we played really well before the last two weeks and then we have struggled to win these last two weeks.

“We will be playing at home, we need these three points and we want to stay up there [near the top of the table] again so I think it is a very important game.”

The Toffees arrive in strong form. Only Manchester City and Aston Villa have collected more points over the last six Premier League games.

The visitors have won four of their last five matches, keeping a clean sheet in every victory.

Under David Moyes, they have also turned into one of the league’s toughest away sides. Since his return, only Arsenal have earned more away points.

“They are playing really well, they have won a lot of games and they are only having one game a week so they are arriving very fresh.

“Hopefully we can play a good game, we can arrive focused, we can control the game.”

He added: “We expect them to be very good in transition and they have really good players so hopefully we can control them and win the game.”

Enzo Maresca’s men will look to draw confidence from their strong home performances this season.

The Blues have shown attacking quality and resilience at Stamford Bridge.

Now, with pressure building and the table tightening, Cucurella and his teammates know this is a moment to respond and push their campaign back on track.
