Wissa fires first warning shot and promises more for Newcastle

Yoane Wissa is only just getting started at Newcastle. And now the forward believes momentum is finally on his side.

The striker hit his first goal for the Magpies in the Carabao Cup win over Fulham. It felt like a breakthrough moment. It also felt like the start of something.

He arrived in the summer from Brentford for £55m. But the journey stalled almost instantly.

Just days after signing, he picked up a knee injury with DR Congo. The setback kept him out for more than three months. However, he refused to fold. He worked. He stayed patient. Then he returned.

Now, he feels sharper. He feels ready. And he wants more.

“There’s more to come for sure,” he told Sky Sports. “As I said, I’m not in a perfect peak yet. It’s going to take a few weeks to build up and I know I’ve got a step to achieve.

“But I know who I am. I’m a hard worker. I love playing football. And yes, I hope I’m going to score many goals here. And I know I’m not 100 per cent, but there’s more to come for sure.

“I hope I score a lot of goals, a lot of assists and a lot of wins. This is what we need now. We need a big momentum now as the season is getting tougher and tougher.”

He added: “We need a big momentum and for myself, a lot of goals and happy moments. This is just what I need now.

“[Start to life in Newcastle] has been strange, but it’s my destiny. But as I said, I’m glad I had this moment I was injured as I could take the time to settle here with my family.

“But it’s been frustrating, especially the last four weeks at the end of the rehab because I really want to be in this club.

“But I think we took the time perfectly and managed well to come back stronger.”

Those words sound like a striker ready to push forward. Ready to sprint through the season. Ready to help Newcastle climb again.

The team needs goals. They need energy. They need belief. And Wissa wants to deliver all three.

He knows he is not at peak level yet. But he can feel the rhythm returning. And as the fixtures keep coming, he wants to stay on the front foot.

For Newcastle, this could be perfect timing. A striker who wants to write his own story on Tyneside.

And as the campaign gets tougher, he plans to stay in the box, stay confident, and stay decisive.
