Alloy Agu backs Nigeria to overcome tough Algeria test

Former Nigerian goalkeeper Alloy Agu is confident the Super Eagles will overcome the challenge posed by Algeria ahead of their 2025 AFCON quarterfinal showdown later today.

The Super Eagles and the Desert Warriors face-off in a last eight encounter in Marrakesh, with the winner advancing to face host nations Morocco, who defeated Cameroon in their own quarterfinal clash.

Both sides also met at the 2019 AFCON semifinal, but Algeria claimed a 2-1 win to progress to the final courtesy of a stunning late free-kick from Riyad Mahrez.

Speaking in an interview ahead of the match, Agu who was part of the 1994 AFCON-winning squad believes the team will progress from the clash.

“I expect a difficult game against Algeria. However, I still believe that the Super Eagles have more firepower to subdue the Algerians in the quarter-finals”, Agu admitted.

“The trio of Lookman, Osimhen, and Adams will definitely be tough to handle by the Algerian defence. Again, Eagles always bring out their ‘A’ game when they play against strong opposition.”

Nigeria have been very impressive so far at the ongoing African Cup of Nations tournament, sealing four wins from four games played.

They finished their group stage campaign with a 100% record following victories over Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda, before claiming an impressive 4-0 win over Mozambique in their Round of 16 affair.

Algeria, meanwhile, also have a perfect record at the tournament, but went through extra-time to defeat DR Congo in their own Round of 16 matchup.

“I am very optimistic that the Super Eagles will end Algeria’s AFCON dream on Saturday”, he continued.

Nigeria will face Algeria at the Stade de Marrakech later today, with kickoff at 5 PM, with the winner progressing to the semifinals which will take place on the 14th of January in Rabat.
