The Confederation of African Football has handed Samuel Eto’o a four-match ban following an incident during Cameroon’s 2-0 defeat to host nation Morocco at the Africa Cup of Nations, a decision that has already sparked strong reactions from the Cameroon Football Federation.
CAF confirmed in an official statement that the Fecafoot president was sanctioned for alleged misconduct during last Friday’s high-stakes encounter.
Cameras reportedly captured Eto’o making an angry gesture in response to refereeing decisions, with the incident occurring in full view of CAF president Patrice Motsepe.
As the contest progressed, tensions spilled over on the pitch, with players from both sides involved in moments of jostling that added to an already heated atmosphere.
In addition to the suspension, CAF’s disciplinary board imposed a $20,000 fine on the former Cameroon captain.
However, Fecafoot wasted no time in challenging the ruling, insisting the punishment was handed down without sufficient explanation.
“Lacks any explicit justification,” the statement read.
The federation also questioned the process that led to the verdict, raising concerns about procedural fairness and confirming its intention to appeal the decision.
“The expedited procedure leading to this decision raises serious concerns regarding the fundamental requirements of a fair process.”
Despite the setback, Fecafoot publicly threw its weight behind its president, reiterating confidence in Eto’o’s leadership while stressing its commitment to what it described as credible disciplinary justice.
“Fecafoot reaffirms its support for its president and its commitment to respecting the principles governing credible disciplinary justice.”
The controversy comes as CAF continues investigations into violent confrontations at the tournament, with officials acknowledging growing concerns over discipline and conduct during AFCON matches.
Meanwhile, attention on the pitch shifts to the final, where Morocco will face Senegal on Sunday in a showdown to crown the 2025 African champions.
