Liam Rosenior has admitted Chelsea fell well short of expectations after a frustrating defeat to Everton, describing the outing as a “really difficult evening” on Merseyside.
From the outset, Chelsea struggled to find rhythm, and the early pressure eventually told.
Midway through the first half, James Garner unlocked the defence with a precise pass, allowing Beto to lift a composed finish over Robert Sanchez.
In response, Chelsea attempted to rally and carve out opportunities before the break.
The clearest opening fell to Enzo Fernandez, but Jordan Pickford produced a top-class save to keep Everton ahead heading into half-time.
As the second half unfolded, momentum briefly swung Chelsea’s way, yet they failed to capitalise.
Pickford once again denied Fernandez, and moments later, Everton seized control as Beto struck his second of the night.
From there, the hosts pushed on, with Iliman Ndiaye adding a third to wrap up a dominant display.
Reflecting after the final whistle, Rosenior did not shy away from criticism of his side’s performance.
“In terms of the things we’ve spoken about, not gifting goals away, making sure we’re in the game, getting control of the game, it wasn’t there,” Rosenior said.
“It turned into a really difficult evening where the result and performance were nowhere near what we expected or wanted.”
Despite spells of control, the Blues were undone by missed chances and lapses in concentration: issues Rosenior acknowledged as decisive in the outcome.
“We had an edgy start in terms of the cheap giveaways, then we managed to gain control of the game, were in their half, arriving and creating moments which we didn’t take – we weren’t clinical enough.
“But then, it feels like out of nowhere, they score. That isn’t the first time that’s happened, and what happens if you’re in a difficult run of games is that your energy and confidence levels can drop when the other team scores first. That’s what happened.
“Pickford makes a world-class save at 1-0, then we come out in the second half and have control of the game, but we make a mistake and they’re 2-0 up, which gives them even more energy. It’s about flow and momentum, and we didn’t have that in the game today.”
Meanwhile, the defeat extends the London side’s difficult run, marking a fourth consecutive loss across all competitions.
Still, Rosenior remains confident in the commitment of his players.
“I don’t think there’s a lack of effort, I don’t think there’s a lack of belief and determination in the team.
“I am aware that when you’re on a run of defeats and performances that we’ve had, those things get levelled at you but I don’t think that’s the issue in this moment.”
All things considered, Chelsea now face a crucial period to reset and respond, as they look to rediscover momentum and steady their season in the games ahead.
