Arne Slot believes Liverpool must improve on both ends of the pitch to put an end to recent criticism ahead of the UEFA Champions League clash against Qarabag on Wednesday.
The Reds face the Azerbaijan side in their final UCL league-phase match later today, hoping to bounce back from the weekend’s 3-2 defeat at Bournemouth in the Premier League.
The Premier League champions have come under criticism over their playing pattern in recent weeks, deeming their passage of play too passive as they have struggled to create much opportunities.
However, during his prematch press conference on Tuesday, Slot addressed the issues and urged his players to improve their performances.
“It’s going to be really difficult to quieten the outside noise with the position we are in. Every loss or disappointing result will start the noise coming back again”, the Liverpool boss said.
“That’s what you can expect when we have moments with so many losses. It’s impossible to shut out the noise if you are not competing for the league.
For me, it’s so simple. In between the boxes we are a very good team. Also, against Bournemouth, so many times we were in positions I want my players to be in.”
Liverpool are currently in fourth position on the Champions League standings and could seal a top-eight spot with a point against Qarabag.
The Reds have won five of their seven matches so far, but suffered a disappointing 4-1 defeat in their last home match against PSV Eindhoven.
“But killing those moments. Bringing it from promising positions to creating chances. If we have the chances, then be clinical and finish it off. That is something we have to improve”, Slot added.
“If we can improve in both boxes it can be a special season. If we can only improve in one box, then it’s going to be probably an acceptable season, If we can’t improve in either box, there’s going to be a lot of noise.”
