Howe takes responsibility for Newcastle’s defeat to Brentford

Eddie Howe says he is to be blamed after Newcastle United were booed at full time by their own supporters following their 3-2 defeat to Brentford on Saturday.

The Magpies played host to the Bees at St James’ Park hoping for an upturn in results, but were left stunned by a very determined away side.

Sven Botman gave the home side the leads in the 24th minute, but Vitaly Janelt equalized for the visitors in the 36th minute, before Igor Thiago struck from the penalty spot in first half stoppage-time to give Brentford a 2-1 lead into the interval.

“I’ve always said the pressure I put on myself couldn’t be more extreme because I demand really high standards from what I’m doing, how I work, what I ask the players to do and I’m obviously not doing my job well enough at the moment”, a disappointed Howe said after the match.

“There’s a harsh reality for me. I’ve got to think long and hard — not about my effort because I can’t question that about myself — but I think I’ve got to work better, I’ve got to do more.”

Bruno Guimaraes, making his first appearance in a while for Newcastle, pulled them back on level terms in the 79th minute from the spot.

However, Dango Ouattara netted with five minutes to go as Brentford sealed a 3-2 win over Newcastle United to record their 12th win of the campaign and move up to seventh on the standings.

For Newcastle, it was their fourth defeat in five matches across all competitions, highlighting a need for improvement.

“I’ve got to take full responsibility for everything you see on the pitch and I’ve got to work out solutions. I think that’s for me to do”, Howe added.

“Then, of course, I have to ask the same from the players.”

Newcastle return to action on Tuesday night when they face a struggling Tottenham Hotspur, hoping to end their winless streak.
