Joao Pedro laments missed opportunity as Chelsea shared spoils with Leeds

Chelsea’s push for five straight Premier League victories came to a halt after a dramatic 2-2 draw against Leeds United at Stamford Bridge, and Joao Pedro did not hide his frustration at full-time.

The Blues burst out of the blocks and quickly seized control of proceedings.

Pedro ignited the night, lifting a delicate dink over the onrushing Leeds goalkeeper to hand Chelsea a deserved early advantage.

From there, momentum stayed firmly with the hosts as they dictated tempo and territory.

As the game flowed into the second half, Pedro once again proved decisive and this time as provider.

After winning a penalty through sheer persistence inside the box, Cole Palmer stepped up and calmly converted from the spot.

That strike made it four goals in two games for the in-form No. 10 and doubled Chelsea’s lead on the night.

However, just when it looked like the Blues would cruise to another three points, Leeds fought back.

First, they pulled one goal back to swing the momentum, and then, capitalising on hesitation at the back, they restored parity.

Despite late chances falling to both Pedro and Palmer, Chelsea could not find the decisive blow, and the contest ended level.

Speaking after the final whistle, Pedro admitted the result felt like a missed opportunity.

“We are very frustrated because I think we started the game very well,” he said. “We controlled the game at 1-0 and 2-0, but in the end, we conceded. This season has been like this.

“I think we have to be more consistent and more focused, and kill the game, but today it happened again. We need to look at ourselves to see where we can improve.

“When things like this happen, where we could win the game – I had a chance, Cole had a chance – I think it’s just not our day. We need to be focused to try to win the game.

“I think we need to be more consistent. If you want to achieve the Champions League and top four, you cannot drop points like this.”

Chelsea’s inability to see out the game has been a recurring theme this season, and Pedro acknowledged that more could have been done defensively, particularly for Leeds’ equaliser.

He added: “We need to clear the ball. If you wait and get too many people around the ball, that can happen. It’s difficult. Today we played a great game, but we need to be more focused. We can’t concede like this.

“I just try to improve every day in the training sessions, and I think now I have shown on the pitch what I‘m capable of doing, but I think I still have a lot to improve.”

Ultimately, while Chelsea showed attacking sharpness and control for large spells, the inability to close out the contest proved costly.

As the race for Champions League qualification intensifies, the Blues know that turning dominance into decisive victories will be crucial in the weeks ahead.
