Edwards hails Wolves’ performance after shock win over Aston Villa

Wolves recorded only their second league win of the season following their 2-0 triumph over Aston Villa on Friday night, to the delight of manager Rob Edwards.

The West Midlands club had only won once from their first 28 matches, but grabbed a vital three points as they continue an unlikely battle for survival.

The win also moved them to 13 points for the season and means they have now surpassed Derby County’s tally of 11 for the lowest points in a single Premier League season set in the 2007-08 season.

Speaking after the much-needed win, Edwards praised his team’s resilience as they dug deep against a quality Aston Villa side.

“It was a special moment in a really difficult season. It’s nice to be able to show some emotion and build that connection that we’re desperate to do. That’s why I came in on nights like that. Really special moments. That’s a moment that will live with me forever”, Edwards revealed.

Aston Villa dominated the first half, but it was Wolves who broke the deadlock in the 61st minute.

Joao Gomes was on the end of a fine team move, firing into the net via the underside of the crossbar after an assist from Adam Armstrong.

He was involved in their second goal in stoppage-time, after his strike deflected off Morgan Rogers and fell kindly for Rodrigo Gomes to finish brilliantly.

“Yeah, there was a lot of emotion. I lost myself for a while. Football can do that to you. I sort of forgot where I was. My daughters were probably up there looking at me thinking, what are you doing down there? Calm down”, Edwards added.

“Yeah, and then I pulled my calf and put my foot through a board in as well I think. I know it’s been a really difficult season, but if you can’t enjoy those moments in a really big game against a brilliant team, then you should not be in the game.”

Wolves will now carry their momentum into Tuesday’s clash against Champions League hopefuls Liverpool, hoping to record consecutive wins for the first time this season.
