Andy Robertson vows Liverpool loyalty despite uncertain future

Andy Robertson has reaffirmed his commitment to Liverpool, insisting he will remain dedicated to the club until the moment he is “no longer needed.”

The Scotland captain faces an uncertain future at Anfield with his current deal set to expire this summer.

Meanwhile, competition for the left-back role has intensified following the emergence of Milos Kerkez, who has moved ahead of Robertson in the pecking order.

Interest in the experienced defender has also surfaced in recent months. Tottenham Hotspur submitted a £5 million bid during the January transfer window, while Atletico Madrid had previously explored a potential move six months earlier.

The Reds were initially open to discussions out of respect for Robertson’s long-standing service and his desire to gain clarity about his future ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

However, injuries within the squad forced the club to reconsider, ultimately withdrawing from the negotiations.

Despite the transfer speculation, Robertson never pushed to leave. The 31-year-old has started only 14 of Liverpool’s 27 matches this season, with five of those appearances coming in the UEFA Champions League and another five in the Premier League.

Nevertheless, he reminded supporters of his value during Liverpool’s recent FA Cup victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he both scored and provided an assist in the same match for the first time in over four years.

“There was obviously interest there [from Tottenham] and there were discussions had with both sets of clubs, but the decision was that I wanted to stay,” said Robertson.

“I was never not committed. I’ve been committed to Liverpool for the last eight and a half or nine years now and I’ll be committed until I’m no longer needed. That’s always been my mindset.

“This club has given me everything and I’ve given this club everything. It’s been a fantastic relationship so hopefully that continues. Obviously January happened but it is now gone.

“Now we move forward and my focus never came off trying to help the lads on the pitch and in training.

“Whatever was happening behind the scenes happened, and all I can say is that I kept focusing on football.”

Robertson also highlighted his strong relationship with key figures within the club’s hierarchy, including sporting director Richard Hughes and senior executives at Fenway Sports Group.

“I’ve got an amazing relationship with Richard Hughes [sporting director] and with Mike Gordon [president of owners Fenway Sports Group] and Michael Edwards [FSG’s chief executive of football],” he added.

“These people [Gordon and Edwards] brought me to the football club, they have helped make me who I am.

“Out of respect to them the conversations will be in-house. I don’t think it will get played out in public.

“My thought process is I want to win trophies at Liverpool, that has always been my focus.

“It’s not gone the way that we wanted in the league – that is clear – and we’re out of the Carabao Cup so we have got two chances.

“If we have more performances like we did Friday then we have a chance. If we play like Tuesday [losing 2-1 in the league at Wolves] then we have no chance, so we need to try and find that consistency.”

With Liverpool still chasing silverware this season, Robertson remains determined to contribute whenever called upon as he continues to honour his long-standing commitment to the club.
