Former Bayern Munich midfielder Ze Roberto has candidly reflected on the only disappointing chapter of his remarkable career, admitting his brief spell at Real Madrid failed because he was not prepared for the demands of the club.
The Brazilian is widely regarded as one of the most underrated players of his generation.
Over a professional career that stretched from 1994 to 2017, he built a formidable reputation, particularly during his legendary years at Bayern.
During his time in Germany, Roberto became a key figure in the Bavarians’ success, winning multiple trophies while sharing the pitch with stars such as Bastian Schweinsteiger, Franck Ribery and Michael Ballack.
His trophy haul included four Bundesliga titles and four DFB-Pokal triumphs, cementing his status as a club icon.
However, before establishing himself in the Bundesliga, the ex-Brazilian international had an earlier opportunity with Los Blancos during the 1997–98 season.
The move came when he was still developing as a player, and his time in Spain lasted just one year before he eventually moved on to the German top-flight outfit.
Looking back in a recent interview, Roberto openly admitted that his struggles in Madrid were largely self-inflicted.
“I failed at Real Madrid because I played PlayStation until the early morning, ate badly and slept very little,” he said.
Reflecting further on that difficult period, he acknowledged he arrived at the Spanish giants without the mental and tactical readiness required to thrive.
“I arrived at one of the biggest clubs in the world without being prepared psychologically or tactically.”
The former midfielder also revealed how different he felt compared to the other players in the dressing room, both in lifestyle and personal habits.
“In the dressing room at Real Madrid, everyone wore suits, while I arrived with simple clothes.
“Roberto Carlos joked that people would think I had come to paint the dressing room,” he added.
Beyond lifestyle differences, the midfielder pointed to the demanding intensity of football at Real Madrid as another major challenge he struggled to match.
“The intensity at Real Madrid was different and I couldn’t keep up with the pace.
“Because of that I lost performance and gained weight. It was the only time in my career when I was not in my best physical shape,” he explained.
Despite the difficult experience, the Brazilian legend said the episode ultimately became a turning point in his professional mindset.
Determined to improve, he began investing more effort into his physical conditioning and career discipline.
“When I realised football had become more physical, I started investing more in myself.
“I understood that my body was my working tool and I had to treat it like a machine that needs daily maintenance,” he concluded.
In hindsight, that lesson proved crucial, helping Roberto rebuild his career and eventually become one of the most respected midfielders of his era.
