Arteta hails record-breaking Dowman’s impact in Arsenal’s win over Everton

Mikel Arteta has praised Max Dowman’s record-breaking performance for Arsenal after their hard-fought 2-0 win over Everton in the Premier League on Saturday.

Dowman came on in the second half of that encounter with the scores goalless and had a hand in both goals, including scoring the second and becoming the youngest-ever Premier League goalscorer at 16 years and 73 days.

The teenager whipped in a superb cross minutes after coming on which was missed by Jordan Pickford, allowing Victor Gyokeres to open the scoring, before netting a remarkable solo goal after running more than half the length of the pitch.

Speaking after the game, Arteta was impressed with Dowman’s performance as Arsenal edged closer to the Premier League title.

“It was a great moment, especially with the way the goal built up. We had 10 or 15 seconds to really enjoy what was about to happen”, Arteta admitted.

“It was magical, all the bench and players together jumping up with the crowd, it was a beautiful day.

“He changed the game every time he got the ball. He made things happen and we looked like more of a threat.

To do it at that age, in this context, with the pressure and expectations to win the game, it’s just not normal. It’s natural for him. He doesn’t feel the pressure – that’s the best thing. He does what he feels and when you have such a talent, I’m sure good things are going to happen”, the Spaniard added.

Arsenal now have 70 points after 31 matches, nine more than second-placed Manchester City who have played 30 games.

The Gunners are not in action in the league until April 11 when they face Bournemouth, as they will be hoping for a win in that encounter to move closer to a first Premier League title in 22 years.

“The impact the finishers are having this season is remarkable. Everybody is important and adding to the team”, Arteta continued.

“There are times when we have to patient because with all the dominance and the amount of shots we have when we don’t score, the anxiety is building.

“You have to stay composed, be relentless in your desire to win the game and make something happen. The team had the spirit today.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal will shift attention to the UEFA Champions League clash against Bayer Leverkusen in midweek, as they hope to seal progress to the next round.
