NFF appeals FIFA decision on DR Congo World Cup playoffs clash

Nigeria Football Federation have swiftly moved into action, launching an appeal against a ruling by FIFA over their protest involving DR Congo national football team in the FIFA World Cup playoffs.

The controversy stems from the African playoff final held in Rabat on November 16, 2025, where DR Congo edged Nigeria national football team via a dramatic penalty shootout after a 1–1 draw across regulation and extra time.

In the immediate aftermath, the NFF filed a formal petition, alleging irregularities in the eligibility of certain DR Congo players, particularly surrounding the issuance of passports used to qualify them for the match.

However, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee dismissed the petition, a decision that has now triggered a strong response from Nigerian football authorities.

“We have received the decision of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee on our petition, but we are not satisfied with the decision, which rejected our petition,” said Mohammed Sanusi.

“I want to assure Nigerians that the NFF has immediately commenced the process of appealing the decision.”

Determined to press forward, the NFF is now taking the matter to the next level, hoping to overturn the ruling and revisit the circumstances surrounding the match.

The clash itself, played at the Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan Stadium, marked a decisive moment in the qualification race, with DR Congo securing progression under intense pressure.

As the appeal process gathers pace, the situation adds another layer of tension to Nigeria’s World Cup ambitions.

All eyes now turn to FIFA’s next move, as the Super Eagles seek clarity and justice in a case that could have significant implications for the tournament lineup.
