Harry Maguire is optimistic about extending his stay at Manchester United, yet the experienced defender has made it clear that any new deal must be based on footballing merit, not emotions.
As the season gathers momentum, the 33-year-old has become a key figure once again, featuring consistently since Michael Carrick stepped into the dugout in January.
His solid performances at the back have helped United climb into third place in the Premier League standings, while also earning him a recall to the England squad.
With the clock ticking on his current contract, set to expire midway through the upcoming World Cup, talks over a renewal are already underway.
“I think there’s been talks,” Maguire said. “I think we’ll reach an agreement where it’s best for the club and myself.
“What that agreement is, I’m sure you’ll find out over the next few weeks. But, yeah, I think it’ll get sorted sooner rather than later, whether I stay or leave. But I think it will – it should – get sorted pretty soon.”
While Maguire’s connection to the club remains strong, he emphasized that any extension must align with both his ambitions and the club’s long-term plans.
“Yeah, I love this club. But it’s got to be right for myself, it’s got to be right for the club as well.
“I don’t want to be staying on a sentimental value. I want to be staying because I want to be there and the club want me to drive the club forward still, and they feel like I’ve got a big part to play in it.
“And if that’s the case, then I’m sure we’ll sit down and reach something.”
Meanwhile, on the international front, Maguire remains in contention as part of Thomas Tuchel’s provisional squad ahead of the World Cup selection.
As both club and country commitments intensify, the coming weeks could prove crucial in determining his future at Old Trafford.
