Brobbey’s late strike fires Sunderland to derby win over Newcastle United

Brian Brobbey scored the winner on the stroke of regular time as Sunderland completed a stunning second half comeback to defeat Newcastle United 2-1 in Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby.

The Black Cats also set a new Premier League record with 11 games unbeaten in the derby, as they ended their two-match losing streak across all competitions.

Newcastle United headed into the clash looking for a response following their embarrassing 7-2 defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League in midweek and they were off to a good start as they took the lead inside 10 minutes.

Nick Woltemade picked out Anthony Gordon, who fired home into the net for his 17th goal across all competitions this season.

Anthony Elanga then wasted a great goalscoring opportunity, before Sven Botman headed a corner kick against the crossbar as Newcastle took a one-goal lead into the break.

Sunderland became more improved in the second half and were level after Ramsdale made a mess of a corner kick, allowing Chemsdine Talbi to equalize in the 57th minute.

The home side were denied by an instant response by the Black Cats goalkeeper, before Malick Thiaw finally had the ball in the back of the net. The defender’s strike was ruled out for a foul in the buildup as the scoreline remained level heading into full time.

Brobbey scored in the final minute of regulation time to win it for Sunderland, who claimed a 2-1 result and moved up to 11th on the standings.

The visitors also completed the double over their hosts, after also winning the reverse fixture 1-0 in December

The only blemish on the clash was a stoppage in second half after reports of an alleged abuse on Sunderland’s Lutsharel Geertruida.

Newcastle, meanwhile, drop to 12th on the standings after their 13th league defeat of the season.
