Maguire backs Carrick for long-term stay at Manchester United

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has tipped interim head coach Michael Carrick to land the job on a permanent basis ahead of next season.

Carrick rejoined the Red Devils in January following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim and has helped the club to 23 points from a possible 30, overseeing remarkable improvement during his short stint.

Meanwhile, the three-time European champions are still searching for a new permanent manager and have been linked with the likes of Luis Enrique, Roberto de Zerbi and Gareth Southgate.

Maguire, though, believes that Carrick has earned the right to be considered for the long-term role after an impressive time so far.

“Listen, Carrick coming in, he’s been amazing. He speaks really, really well. He’s tactically very, very good”, Maguire stated.

“He’s brought in some amazing staff. Steve Holland, amazing to bring his experience in and someone he can lean on.

“He’s got Jonathan Woodgate and Jonny Evans there helping the younger defenders at the club and all the defenders giving us tips.

“Listen, it’s not up to us. I think there’s seven games left. We’ve put ourselves in a great position. I think we’ve got to finish the season strong, and I think he should go right into the mix of the other candidates and let the process begin”, the England defender added.

Maguire, who is out of contract at the club in the summer, also faces uncertainty over his future.

However, reports have emerged that an extension is close to being sealed between both parties, which would see Maguire stay beyond this campaign.

“I’m sure it will do and I’m sure it’s going to be a thorough process, and it’s going to be a big summer. We know that for Manchester United, We need bodies in, bodies to help the squad, we know that”, the former Leicester City defender said.

“We need improvement in the squad and we need more bodies. It’s going to be a big recruitment in the management department, and I’m sure that the hierarchy will get it right.”

Maguire earned a recall to the England national team and will be in contention to feature in both of their international friendly games against Uruguay and Japan later this month.
