EFL: Birmingham Chairman Tom Wagner recovering after stroke scare

Birmingham City have confirmed that chairman Tom Wagner is recovering after suffering a stroke, with the club reassuring supporters that he is receiving the best possible care.

Wagner, who completed his takeover of the Blues in 2023 and has since overseen a return to the Championship alongside ambitious plans for a new stadium project, is said to be making positive progress following swift medical intervention.

In an official statement, the club moved quickly to calm concerns while rallying support around their chairman.

“Birmingham City chairman Tom Wagner recently suffered a stroke. Thanks to rapid medical intervention, he received immediate treatment and is now receiving excellent care,” the club said in an official statement on their website.

“We are pleased to share that he is making a good recovery. While he will be stepping back from day-to-day activity for a period of time to focus on his recovery, Tom remains closely connected to the club, and we all look forward to welcoming him back.

“Birmingham City Football Club is incredibly important to Tom and to the entire Knighthead team. Their commitment to the club is unchanged, and our plans and operations continue as normal under strong leadership.

“We appreciate your continued support and ask that you respect Tom’s privacy during his recovery.”

Importantly, the club emphasized that operations will continue as planned under the Knighthead leadership structure. From transfer strategy to long-term infrastructure development, Birmingham’s roadmap remains firmly on track.

Wagner has played a pivotal role in reshaping the direction of the club since his arrival, steering Birmingham back into the Championship and laying the groundwork for future growth.

For now, however, the focus shifts from the boardroom to recovery, with the Blues faithful undoubtedly wishing their chairman a full and speedy return.
