Jose Mourinho has delivered a blunt assessment of Portugal’s World Cup credentials, insisting the team loses its edge without Cristiano Ronaldo leading the line.
As the countdown to the 2026 World Cup intensifies, Portugal remain among the favourites.
However, Mourinho’s latest remarks suggest their ambitions could hinge heavily on the presence of their iconic forward.
Despite turning 41 earlier this year, Ronaldo continues to defy expectations. The veteran striker has maintained a prolific run in front of goal, netting 22 times in 26 appearances for Al-Nassr this season.
Yet, his recent absence due to injury was felt during Portugal’s goalless draw against Mexico, where the attack struggled to find rhythm.
Goncalo Ramos spearheaded the frontline in that fixture, supported by Joao Felix, Francisco Conceicao, and Bruno Fernandes, but the spark was missing as Portugal failed to break through.
Mourinho, drawing from his experience working with Ronaldo at Real Madrid, did not hold back in his evaluation.
“Take Cristiano Ronaldo out of the picture and Portugal look like any run-of-the-mill team,” Mourinho is quoted as saying.
“When Ronaldo is on the pitch, the opposition think twice. Without him, they don’t think at all.”
As the tournament approaches, Mourinho’s comments add a new layer to Portugal’s narrative.
While the squad boasts depth and talent, the psychological and tactical influence of Ronaldo remains a decisive factor.
In football terms, Portugal may have the pieces; but according to Mourinho, their true cutting edge still revolves around one man.
