Manchester United suffered a fresh injury blow as center-back Victor Lindelof limped off injured during Sweden’s 2-1 UEFA Nation’s League victory over Slovakia on Saturday.
Having missed the start of the season due to a toe injury, Lindelof has managed only seven appearances this year, including 58 minutes across four Premier League matches.
To the dismay of many United faithful, the Sweden national team captain seems to be set for another spell on the sidelines after he exited the game just 26 minutes in.
While the severity of the injury remains unclear, the veteran defender’s frustration was evident as he repeatedly hit the ground and flung his armband in frustration.
“It’s horrible to see,” Tottenham Hotspur’s Dejan Kulusevski said of his international teammate. “He has just come through a long injury. It’s hard to see him like that and I know how hard it is to come back again. It’s the worst there is. He is a fantastic guy who deserves the best.”
Although the Swedish international has not been a consistent starter for the Red Devils in recent years, he may have anticipated a more regular role under new head coach Ruben Amorim, who is expected to implement his favored 3-4-3 formation following his appointment last week.
With the likes of Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro both unavailable, Lindelof could have been poised for an increased role in the defensive lineup.
Currently, Matthijs de Ligt and Jonny Evans are believed to be the only fully fit center-backs at United, while Lisandro Martinez recently withdrew from the Argentina squad due to a hip injury.
