Ibrahima Konate has delivered a candid assessment following Liverpool’s Champions League elimination at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain.
On a frustrating night at Anfield, the Reds fell 2-0 to the defending champions, sealing a 4-0 aggregate defeat.
Despite the scoreline, the contest told a more complex story, with Liverpool creating multiple chances but failing to convert when it mattered most.
As the match unfolded, Arne Slot’s side pushed forward with intent, only to be denied by fine margins, including a second-half penalty decision overturned by VAR.
Moments later, the tide turned as Ousmane Dembele capitalised with two decisive goals to put the tie beyond reach.
Reflecting on whether the aggregate score truly captured the balance of play, Konate admitted mixed feelings about the outcome.
“To be honest, we can say yes and no, because when we played there they had many chances and they only scored two,” said the Frenchman.
“But we knew at Anfield we can maybe do something special.
“Today we created many chances and I think on the pitch we were the better team today.
“That’s why it’s a little bit unfair. It’s like the last season when we played [PSG] at home, we created many chances, we had so many opportunities to score.
“But at the end they had maybe one or two clear chances and they scored. This is football. Sad.”
The turning point of the encounter arguably came with the overturned penalty, a moment that could have shifted the momentum in Liverpool’s favour.
“I think last season we had a penalty like that with, I think, [Diogo] Jota.
“I don’t remember which game exactly. For me, it was a clear penalty.”
He added: “I was just behind the referee at the VAR but he didn’t say it’s a penalty. Then, we have to deal with that.
“But I think at this moment if we get a penalty and we score, it’s completely different.”
As the final whistle confirmed their exit, Liverpool were left to reflect on missed opportunities and fine margins.
Now, with the European campaign over, focus quickly shifts to finishing the season strongly and responding with renewed intensity in the games ahead.
