Andres Iniesta has officially embarked on a new chapter in football after being appointed head coach of Gulf United, marking the first managerial role of his illustrious career.
The former Barcelona and Spain midfield maestro joins the UAE First Division League side after ending his playing days with Emirates Club, another team based in the United Arab Emirates.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of his generation, Iniesta now turns his attention to coaching as he looks to build a new legacy from the dugout.
Speaking after his appointment, Iniesta explained why Gulf United was the ideal destination to launch his coaching career.
“Joining Gulf United FC feels like the right place to begin this new chapter,” said Iniesta.
“Football has given me everything, and now I want to give something back through coaching, through learning, and through working every day with young players who have the hunger and the talent to go far.
“I believe in developing footballers the right way: with patience, with a clear idea of how the game should be played, and with genuine care for each individual.
“Gulf United shares that philosophy, and that is why I am here. I want to grow as a coach, gain real experience, and earn my Pro Licence.”
Iniesta retired from professional football in 2024 following a glittering career packed with silverware and unforgettable moments.
The Spanish legend won four UEFA Champions League titles and nine La Liga crowns during his remarkable spell at Barcelona.
On the international stage, he helped Spain dominate world football, winning two UEFA European Championships and the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
His place in football history was cemented when he scored the extra-time winner against the Netherlands in the 2010 World Cup final, delivering Spain’s first-ever world title.
Interestingly, Iniesta had previously suggested that coaching was not necessarily part of his post-playing plans.
However, the opportunity at Gulf United appears to have changed his outlook, offering him a platform to develop his coaching philosophy while working closely with emerging talent.
Founded in 2019, Gulf United continue to establish themselves within UAE football. The club finished 10th in the 2025/26 UAE First Division League campaign, one level below the country’s top-flight competition.
For a player who achieved almost everything football has to offer, management presents a fresh challenge.
While his achievements on the pitch have already secured his place among the game’s all-time greats, football fans around the world will now be watching closely to see whether Iniesta can replicate that success from the touchline.
The journey from midfield maestro to manager has officially begun.
