Moyes laments missed chances after Everton’s defeat to Liverpool

David Moyes was disappointed with Everton’s defeat to Liverpool on Sunday and is of the opinion that his side should have gotten a favourable outcome from the clash.

The Premier League champions claimed a last-gasp 2-1 win in the first Merseyside derby at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, with captain Virgil Van Dijk scoring a 100th minute winner in the tie.

While Everton produced an impressive performance and wasted several goalscoring chances, the result was a huge disappointment which dealt a setback to their European hopes.

“Yeah, but it doesn’t make me feel any better, that’s for sure”, Moyes said.

The players have been told that I thought they’d done a great job today in the main.

“There were periods in the game where Liverpool had a bit of control. But there were long periods in the game when we had control as well.”

Everton had the ball in the back of the net through Iliman Ndiaye but the goal was ruled out for offside by the Video Assistant Referee.

Liverpool then went ahead in the 29th minute as Mohamed Salah fired home after he was found by Cody Gakpo.

Beto, who had missed several chances earlier in the game, then struck the equalizer earlier in the second half.

Ndiaye was then denied by Freddie Woodman, who made his Premier League debut after coming on for the injured Giorgi Mamarshdavili.

With the game edging towards a fulltime draw, Van Dijk rose highest to head home a corner kick to seal the win.

“We had big opportunities, especially in the first 20 minutes or so. I didn’t think we offered Liverpool too many chances in the whole game, to be honest”, Moyes added.

“It didn’t feel as if we’d given up too many opportunities, so the players have done a good job, but had no rewards out of today.”

Everton will now prepare for their next clash against relegation-threatened West Ham United on Saturday, hoping to keep the pace in the race for European qualification.
