Pep Guardiola has praised Declan Rice for his defiant message following Arsenal’s defeat to Manchester City, insisting the title race is far from over.
City took a significant step in the Premier League battle with a 2-1 victory over the league leaders, closing the gap and shifting momentum in their favour.
With another crucial fixture ahead, Guardiola’s side now have the chance to climb to the summit if results go their way.
However, despite the setback, Rice’s rallying words to his Arsenal teammates, captured after the final whistle, highlighted the Gunners’ refusal to back down, earning admiration from the City boss.
“I love that. I love that,” said Guardiola. “That’s why Arsenal is there.”
Reflecting further, Guardiola pointed to Rice’s leadership and mentality as a key reason behind Arsenal’s strong campaign.
“I saw it [on Monday] and it shows what Declan Rice means.
“That’s the Arsenal mentality, we’ve faced it in the Premier League these [past] seasons and in the Carabao Cup, how competitive they are.”
He continued by acknowledging the resilience embedded within Mikel Arteta’s squad, particularly in high-pressure moments.
“Otherwise they can’t have done the season they have done in the Premier League being there and being unbeaten in the Champions League, as you have Mikel [Arteta] but also these type of players that follow the message.
“And in the bad moments, they have the resilience [to say] we are there, we are there.”
As the run-in intensifies, Guardiola made it clear that City are preparing for a fierce battle until the very end.
“That is a good example for us what we’re going to face in the six games, five games [for them] in the title race.”
When asked if he had used Rice’s comments to motivate his own squad, Guardiola emphasized that his players are fully aware of the challenge ahead.
“They know exactly what opponents we’re going to face in the five games for them, six for us.
“If people think because we beat them, the title race is done, Declan Rice showed us that they are there.”
With both sides locked in a gripping contest, the message is clear—momentum may swing, but the Premier League title race remains wide open heading into the final stretch.
