Rangers captain Tavernier set to leave after 11 years

Rangers captain James Tavernier has confirmed he will leave the club at the end of the season, bringing an emotional close to an 11-year spell at Ibrox.

The experienced defender, who joined from Wigan in 2015, has been a central figure in Rangers’ modern era.

From the moment he took the armband under Steven Gerrard in 2018, Tavernier led from the front, both defensively and offensively, amassing an impressive 562 appearances and 144 goals across all competitions.

Over the years, he helped drive Rangers to major silverware, including the Scottish Premiership title, League Cup, and Scottish Cup, while also captaining the side to a memorable Europa League final.

However, as the final whistle of his contract approaches, Tavernier has decided it is time for a new chapter.

Taking to social media, the 34-year-old shared his thoughts on the difficult decision.

“This club has been a huge part of my life and my family’s over the past 11 years,” he revealed.

“It’s given me so much, both on and off the pitch and from the moment I arrived, I’ve always tried to give everything I had to represent it in the right way.”

Reflecting on his leadership journey, Tavernier spoke with pride about captaining the historic club.

“To have had the honour of being made captain of this club since 2018 is something I will always be incredibly proud of.

“Leading this team out, wearing the armband and being trusted in that role has meant more to me that I can properly put into words.”

Despite announcing his departure, Tavernier made it clear that his focus remains locked on the present campaign.

With Rangers still chasing the league title and just one point behind Hearts, the captain is determined to finish strong.

“This isn’t the end just yet. There is still a season to finish and we are fully focused on pushing for the league title.

“I will continue to give absolutely everything as I always have until the very last day.”

As the season enters its decisive run-in, Tavernier’s message is clear—stay in the fight until the final whistle. Still, with one eye on the future, he acknowledged the timing of his decision.

“While I feel the time is right for a new challenge, my focus right now is on finishing this season the right way, together.”

As Rangers push toward the finish line, Tavernier’s farewell adds extra emotion to the closing fixtures—marking the end of an era defined by leadership, consistency, and unwavering commitment.
