Ampadu backs Leeds United for survival after win over Burnley

Leeds United captain Ethan Ampadu is confident his side will retain their top-flight status for next season following their 3-1 win over Burnley on Friday night.

The Whites recorded their 10th win of the season over the relegated Clarets, which takes them to 43 points and nine points off the drop zone with only three games left to play.

It was also their first win over Burnley in four meetings, as they took a massive step towards Premier League safety for next season.

Speaking after the match, Ampadu expressed satisfaction with the overall performance and has backed them to secure top-flight survival.

“We’re delighted. Personally for us the last couple of years, we haven’t been able to beat Burnley. So we wanted revenge”, Ampadu said.

“We have 43 points, we don’t know what that means, but we like to think we’ve put ourselves a good position. We’re going to enjoy the weekend.”

Leeds United suffered a 1-0 defeat to Chelsea in their last match in the FA Cup semifinal, but returned to winning ways in the Premier League.

Anton Stach opened the scoring with a stunning long rate effort in the eighth minute to give the Whites the lead heading into the break.

Noah Okafor and Dominic Calvert-Lewin added two more goals in the second half as Leeds raced into a 3-0 lead.

Loun Tchaouna pulled one back for Burnley later in the second half, with the game ending 3-1 in favour of the home side.

“We wanted to give the fans a bank holiday weekend to enjoy. We have three more games, hopefully we can have three more good results”, Ampadu added.

“[Daniel Farke] gives everyone the confidence, the license to play with freedom and structure. We’re always well prepared for any game.”

Leeds United now have to pick up at least three points from their remaining three matches – Tottenham (A), Brighton (H) and West Ham United (A), to be assured of safety.
