Roy Keane has cast doubt on whether Andoni Iraola is ready to take the reins at Manchester United, despite acknowledging the impressive work done at Bournemouth.
As the managerial race at Old Trafford heats up, Iraola’s name has entered the conversation, especially with uncertainty still surrounding the future of Michael Carrick.
However, Keane believes stepping into one of football’s most demanding roles is a completely different challenge.
“I’m not sure if he’s done enough yet,” said Keane.
“I’m sure United are looking at him, his contract is up. But could I see him coming to Man Utd? Probably not.”
From Keane’s perspective, the contrast in expectations between the Cherries and the Red Devils is significant.
While Iraola has delivered consistency on the south coast, the stakes at Old Trafford are far higher, where success is measured in trophies, not just performances.
“It depends on the remit, the remit at Bournemouth is different to Man Utd. At Man Utd they threaten to win titles but [at Bournemouth] it is keep winning matches while you sell players and bring in the revenue.
“There is a different pressure at Bournemouth to Man Utd. Would he be an option? I don’t know. You’ve asked me if I see him coming to Man Utd, maybe not.”
Still, Keane did not shy away from praising the Spaniard’s achievements, underlining that Iraola’s rise has not gone unnoticed across the league.
“But he has done an amazing job.”
As Man United weigh their next move, the spotlight remains firmly on whether proven progress at a smaller club can translate into success under the intense glare of Old Trafford.
