Nottingham Forest manager Vitor Pereira paid tribute to Elliot Anderson after the midfielder delivered a dramatic late equaliser against former club Newcastle United in an emotional afternoon at the City Ground.
Forest looked set for defeat after Harvey Barnes fired Newcastle ahead in the 74th minute, but Anderson struck in the 88th minute to rescue a vital 1-1 draw that could prove decisive in the club’s Premier League survival fight.
The goal carried extra emotional weight for the 23-year-old, who reportedly played just two days after attending his mother’s funeral.
Anderson’s determination and composure in the closing stages left Pereira full of admiration for his midfielder’s mentality and character.
“It’s difficult for everybody to understand what he is feeling inside,” Pereira said. “He honoured his mother on the pitch by running until the last minute. He wanted to score and believed until the end.”
The Forest boss also praised Anderson’s mentality, describing him as one of the standout personalities in the squad during a turbulent season that has seen the club battle inconsistency, injuries, and managerial upheaval.
Anderson, who joined Forest from Newcastle in 2024, came back to haunt his former side with a composed finish after exchanging passes with James McAtee before driving beyond Bruno Guimaraes and firing past Nick Pope from a tight angle.
The midfielder’s celebration reflected both relief and exhaustion as teammates surrounded him following the late leveller, a goal that pushed Forest closer to Premier League safety.
Forest’s resurgence under Pereira has transformed the mood around the club in recent months.
Since arriving in February, the Portuguese coach has steadied the side and inspired a strong unbeaten run that now has supporters believing survival is within touching distance.
For Newcastle, the result added to their frustrations after once again dropping points from a winning position, while Forest left the pitch with renewed belief and an emotional hero at the centre of it all.
