Forest’s Awoniyi undergoes emergency surgery after abdominal injury

Following an abdominal injury suffered during Nottingham Forest’s 2-2 match against Leicester City at the City Ground, striker Taiwo Awoniyi has been admitted for emergency surgery.

While trying to convert Anthony Elanga’s cross, the Nigerian international ran into a post and hurt himself badly needing quick medical care.

The match saw Awoniyi extend to grab a cross from Elanga, but he ultimately collided with the goalpost. Though he received on-field treatment and attempted to keep playing, only on Monday did Nottingham Forest’s medical staff determine the extent of his injury.

Reports verified that the Nigeria international was taken urgently to the hospital for emergency abdominal surgery; however, the operation is fortunately not thought to be life-threatening. The club still has to disclose a projected recovery timetable for the Nigerian forward.

How did Forest owner react?

After the final whistle, Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis charged onto the pitch and confronted head coach Nuno Espirito Santo, escalating matters still further. Marinakis vented his anger over how the former Union Berlin forward’s injury was handled, asking why the striker was permitted to keep playing after he was hurt.

Under investigation is Nuno’s judgment in the incident; he consulted medical personnel during stoppage time. Meanwhile, the Tricky Trees’ aspirations for the Champions League have suffered since the club is now seventh in the English top-flight rankings, one point shy of the top five.

City Ground outfit’s UCL dream is under threat with only two games left against West Ham and Chelsea, top-five contenders. Although they are assured a slot in the UEFA Conference League, their most recent appearance in European competition dates back to 1995–96.
