PGMOL admits error on Manchester United’s goal against Nottingham Forest

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) have admitted that Matheus Cunha’s goal for Manchester United against Nottingham Forest should have been disallowed.

Manchester United defeated Nottingham Forest 3-2 in their Premier League meeting last weekend as they held their grip on third spot on the standings.

The Red Devils opened the scoring early in the clash when Luke Shaw fired into the back of the net from inside the area.

Forest equalized in the second half through Morato after just seven minutes into the half, but the main talking point of the match came two minutes later when Manchester United went back ahead in the clash.

Bryan Mbeumo appeared to handle the ball in the box and while his initial attempt was blocked, Matheus Cunha was on hand to stab home to put the Red Devils 2-1 up.

The goal was given on-field and despite a VAR review, referee Michael Salisbury stuck with his original decision to award the goal, much to the frustration of the away side.

Mbeumo then got his goal later in the clash, converting Bruno Fernandes’ cross as the Portuguese equalled the Premier League’s all time single season record of 20, alongside Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry.

Morgan Gibbs-White then pulled one back for Forest to set up a tense finish and while both sides wasted chances in stoppage-time, the game ended 3-2 in favour of Manchester United.

However, the PGMOL have now identified their error and have contacted Nottingham Forest about the decision.

Meanwhile, both sides will move on from the clash ahead of the season finale next weekend. Manchester United face Brighton in their own encounter, while Nottingham Forest welcome Bournemouth to City Ground simultaneously.
