Roberto De Zerbi says he already has a clear vision for how Tottenham Hotspur must rebuild after a turbulent season; but insists survival remains the only priority heading into the final weekend.
Spurs enter Sunday’s decisive clash against Everton sitting 17th in the Premier League table, just two points above West Ham United with a superior goal difference.
With relegation still mathematically possible, De Zerbi refused to look beyond the immediate task despite acknowledging major changes are needed at the club.
“Everyone has to give something more. Then, from 7pm on Sunday, we can organise and make a plan for the next season, considering everything. I am not stupid and I have a very clear [vision] on what we have to do,” De Zerbi told Sky Sports.
The Italian admitted the challenge at Tottenham has been far more difficult than expected after inheriting problems that stretched beyond the pitch.
“It has been a tough experience because I didn’t know before my time. To manage a lot of situations without knowing what happened before me, it is not so easy.
“I am happy and I am proud because I create an important relationship with players, people inside the club and fans. They do not deserve to stay in this place in the table.”
Despite speculation surrounding Tottenham’s future direction, De Zerbi made it clear that discussions about rebuilding the squad will wait until survival is secured.
“No, because it is not the right time. We need to stay focused on the next game,” he responded when asked to expand on his plans.
The Spurs manager also referenced the wider relegation battle, acknowledging comments from David Moyes about helping West Ham’s survival bid.
“I am happy because David Moyes said he wanted to help West Ham. For us, that is a big motivation.
“Premier League is the best league because every game, you have to fight even if you want just one point.
“I am sure Leeds will play the right game [vs West Ham], like they did against us in our stadium.”
Tottenham’s fate now rests firmly in their own hands heading into the final day of the campaign.
De Zerbi insisted his side are fully focused on delivering the result needed to avoid an unthinkable relegation from the Premier League.
“I want to win the game, I don’t want anything from other people. We are ready to go on the pitch, to fight and to play.”
