Manchester United’s Cunha targets World Cup glory with Brazil

Matheus Cunha believes his inclusion in Brazil’s World Cup squad was written in destiny after overcoming difficult moments in his career to shine for Manchester United this season.

The forward joined Carlo Ancelotti’s 26-man Brazil squad on Wednesday — which also marked his 27th birthday — following an impressive second half of the campaign at Old Trafford.

After initially struggling following his £62.5 million move from Wolves last summer, Cunha rediscovered top form to help United secure a third-place Premier League finish and qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Speaking during Friday’s press conference, Cunha reflected on the setbacks that shaped his football journey.

“In football, just as in life, it’s part of the process to go through difficult times and overcome them,” Cunha said.

“After everything I’ve been through, to have my name on the list, to arrive [to international duty] on my birthday — well, we’ll see, won’t we? I think it’s fate. I’m really happy to be part of all this.”

Cunha missed out on Brazil’s 2022 World Cup squad while playing for Atletico Madrid, but his resurgence at Manchester United earned him another opportunity on the international stage.

The Brazilian attacker enjoyed a productive campaign in England, scoring 10 Premier League goals and adding four assists in 33 league appearances.

Despite facing challenges throughout his career, Cunha insists resilience remains his biggest strength.

“It’s hard to make it in football,” Cunha said. “No matter where I’ve been, the challenges are ever-present.

“Overcoming them is the greatest secret I have. That’s when it all becomes worthwhile. I’m proud of how far I’ve come; I know it wasn’t easy, but it’s deeply fulfilling.”

The striker also admitted he is living a dream at Manchester United while aiming to cement his place under Ancelotti ahead of the World Cup.

“I’m really happy with everything that’s been happening for me, at a club I’ve always wanted to play for.

“It’s my first year back in the Champions League, back in the competitions the club should be competing in every year, and now I’ve made it into the Brazil national team.”

Cunha, who has scored once in 21 appearances for Brazil, is eager to impress the legendary Italian manager and his coaching staff during the tournament preparations.

“My dream is to be 100% involved in the run-up to the World Cup; whatever [Ancelotti] needs from me, I’ll try to do my very best,” he added.

Ancelotti is targeting Brazil’s first World Cup triumph since 2002, and Cunha says winning the tournament would complete his football journey after previously winning Olympic gold with Brazil in Tokyo.

“To have an Olympic gold medal and a World Cup trophy… There’s not much more I could ask of God, really,” Cunha said.

“I think hard work pays off; focus and positive thoughts are what allow you to build your castle.”
