Scotland winger Ben Gannon-Doak believes the disappointment of missing Euro 2024 has ultimately helped prepare him for the biggest opportunity of his young career.
The Bournemouth star is part of Steve Clarke’s 26-man squad for the FIFA World Cup and arrives at the tournament feeling stronger, fitter and more ready than ever to contribute on the global stage.
Two years ago, Gannon-Doak was included in Scotland’s preliminary squad for the European Championship but failed to recover from injury in time to secure a place in Germany.
While the setback was painful, the 20-year-old now views it from a different perspective.
“The Euros probably came a bit too early, but I don’t think I would have played if I was there,” he said.
“I think if I did go and play, I wouldn’t have given the best account of myself that I know that I could have done.
“I’m much more prepared and ready to go and play in a tournament now than I was back then.”
Scotland are preparing for their first World Cup appearance since 1998, with a blend of youthful energy and experienced leadership giving supporters reason for optimism.
Gannon-Doak believes the balance within the squad could be a major strength as Scotland attempt to make history.
“The younger lads like myself and Findlay [Curtis] coming into the team, there’s an element of fearlessness.
“The experienced lads that have played 70 or 80 games for Scotland, they know how to manage these games. I think it’s a good mix.”
No Scotland side has ever progressed beyond the group stage of a major international tournament, but Gannon-Doak insists this squad has the quality and confidence to change that narrative.
With several players arriving in strong club form and momentum building ahead of the competition, belief is growing inside the camp.
“It’s not been done before in terms of Scotland teams, but we’ve got everything we need to go and do it.
“I think when you see the form some of the lads are in, we’re in a good place as a squad.
“If you asked one of the more experienced lads, they’d say the same.”
For Gannon-Doak and many of Scotland’s younger players, the World Cup represents a chance to write a new chapter in the nation’s football history.
After the heartbreak of missing Euro 2024, the winger now has the opportunity to showcase his talent on the biggest stage of all — and help Scotland chase a long-awaited breakthrough at a major tournament.
