Christian Eriksen is conscious and receiving further medical examinations after collapsing during Denmark’s international friendly against Ukraine in Odense.
The match was ultimately abandoned following the alarming incident involving the experienced midfielder, who appeared to clutch his chest before falling to the turf in the 65th minute.
Referee Sigurd Smehus Kringstad brought proceedings to a halt, with the fixture later called off as concern spread throughout the stadium.
Fortunately, Danish team officials quickly provided a reassuring update on the 34-year-old’s condition.
“He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly,” doctor Morten Boesen said in a Danish federation statement.
Players from both Denmark and Ukraine gathered around Eriksen as medical staff rushed onto the pitch.
The atmosphere inside Nature Energy Park fell silent before supporters began chanting the midfielder’s name in a show of solidarity.
Boesen later revealed that Eriksen was responsive and able to leave the pitch under his own power.
“Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself. As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should.
“He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him.
“He will now undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident. We are in ongoing contact with him and the doctors at the hospital.
“But Christian is doing well, and he asked me to send his regards to all the players and tell them that he was okay.”
The incident inevitably brought back memories of Eriksen’s cardiac arrest during Denmark’s Euro 2020 match against Finland in June 2021.
On that occasion, the former Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United midfielder required life-saving treatment on the pitch before being fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), a device designed to regulate potentially dangerous heart rhythms.
Despite the ordeal, Eriksen remarkably returned to professional football just eight months later, restarting his career with Brentford before spells with Manchester United and current club VfL Wolfsburg.
Support poured in from across the football world shortly after news of the incident emerged.
Wolfsburg posted: “We’re thinking of you, Christian,” before adding: “All the best and a speedy recovery.”
Former clubs Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United also issued messages of support, wishing the midfielder a swift recovery while awaiting further medical updates.
Widely regarded as one of Denmark’s greatest-ever players, Eriksen has enjoyed a distinguished career spanning Ajax, Tottenham, Inter Milan, Brentford, Manchester United and Wolfsburg.
Known for his creativity, vision and leadership, he remains one of the most respected figures in European football.
For now, the focus remains firmly on his health, with Denmark and the wider football community awaiting the results of further hospital examinations.
