Denmark’s Eriksen issues update after on-pitch collapse against Ukraine

Christian Eriksen has confirmed he is “doing well” and recovering at home after collapsing during Denmark’s international friendly against Ukraine, which was abandoned following the incident.

The 65th-minute scare in Odense saw the midfielder grab his chest before falling to the ground, prompting immediate medical attention on the pitch and the subsequent cancellation of the match.

Eriksen, who previously returned to professional football after suffering a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, later provided an update via Instagram, reassuring fans about his condition.

The 33-year-old revealed that his implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) activated during the incident, but stressed that the situation was different from his collapse in 2021.

“I want to let everyone know that I am doing well and that I am home with my family,” Eriksen wrote.

“As you can probably imagine, receiving a shock from my ICD has had a major impact on both me and my family, but I want to reassure everyone that this was a different situation from what happened in 2021.

“I am feeling good, and my recovery has already started.

“In addition to being grateful for the support and assistance of all the players and the medical team on the field, I am also incredibly grateful to the doctors who have cared for me and my heart over the years.

“Thanks to their expertise, my ICD did exactly what it was designed to do: protect me when I needed it.

“For now, my focus is on recovering, spending time with my family, going on vacation, and playing football with my children.”

Players from both Denmark and Ukraine immediately surrounded Eriksen as medical staff attended to him, with silence falling over the stadium before fans began chanting his name in support.

Referees later confirmed the match would not continue as a precaution.

Eriksen’s latest health scare comes four years after his collapse at Euro 2020, when he suffered a cardiac arrest against Finland and was successfully resuscitated on the pitch.

Despite that setback, he returned to elite football and continued his career at club and international level, becoming one of Denmark’s most influential players.

For now, Eriksen says his priority is recovery, family time, and gradually returning to normal life.
