Benfica have officially appointed Marco Silva as their new head coach, with the former Fulham manager signing a two-year contract following Jose Mourinho’s departure to Real Madrid.
The Portuguese giants confirmed Silva’s arrival shortly after Mourinho’s exit was finalized, marking the beginning of a fresh chapter at the Estadio da Luz.
Mourinho’s return to Real Madrid had long been expected but depended on Florentino Perez securing another term as club president.
That became a reality on Monday when Perez won a landslide victory in the presidential election, paving the way for the Portuguese manager’s second spell at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Benfica confirmed that Real Madrid activated Mourinho’s €15 million (£12.9 million) release clause to secure his services.
“Benfica has informed the CMVM (Portugal’s securities regulator, the Comissao do Mercado de Valores Mobiliarios) that Real Madrid has formally expressed its intention to hire Jose Mourinho for the amount of 15 million euros, with the coach having given his agreement. Thank you, Jose Mourinho,” said a statement from Benfica.
“Benfica announces, in a statement to the CMVM, that it has reached an agreement with Marco Silva for the signing of an employment contract valid for two seasons, extendable until 2028.”
Silva arrives with a strong reputation after his work in the Premier League, but he inherits a side that enjoyed an impressive domestic campaign under Mourinho despite narrowly missing out on the title.
Benfica completed the Primeira Liga season unbeaten but finished third, ending the campaign eight points behind champions Porto after drawing 11 of their 34 league matches.
The challenge for Silva will be converting strong performances into silverware while maintaining Benfica’s status as one of Portugal’s elite clubs.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid have cleared the path for Mourinho’s return by parting ways with Alvaro Arbeloa.
Arbeloa had been appointed in January following Xabi Alonso’s departure but lasted only six months in charge.
Mourinho now returns to the Spanish capital where he previously enjoyed success between 2010 and 2013, winning both La Liga and the Copa del Rey during his first spell.
The managerial reshuffle signals a significant shift for two of Europe’s biggest clubs.
While Benfica look to Silva to deliver domestic and continental success, Real Madrid are turning to a familiar face in Mourinho as they seek to reclaim dominance both in Spain and across Europe.
