Alan Shearer has tipped Harry Kane to lead England to success at the upcoming FIFA World Cup tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
The Three Lions head into the tournament as one of the favourites and will be hoping to recreate their run of 1966 when they went on to lift the mundial.
They reached the semifinals in 2018 and also reached the quarterfinals last time, while they have also been in consecutive European Championships final.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, Premier League all-time topscorer Alan Shearer has backed Kane to play a key role for England and lead them to victory.
“I think with the talent that we have… success, I guess, is winning,” Shearer said.
“But when you think about who you’re going up against, Spain or France or Brazil or Argentina, maybe Portugal, I just think as you go deep into the tournament, (there will be) squads better than England.
“If we defend really well and Harry can do what he’s done, then we have got a live chance of winning it.”
England head into the tournament with several question marks over their squad selection, after Thomas Tuchel decided to leave out several of their key players.
The likes of Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Lewis Hall and Adam Wharton were all left out by the former Chelsea boss.
“If we’re going to go deep, then Harry has to fly”, Shearer continued.
“I don’t expect Harry Kane to play every minute of every game.
“If England are winning comfortably, I don’t think our manager will care about Harry getting a hat trick. He’ll get him off and try and wrap him in cotton wool for the next game”, the ex-Newcastle United striker continued.
England will start their campaign against Croatia on June 17, and will also battle Ghana and Panama in their other group games.
