Cyle Larin scored a second half equalizer as co-host Canada secured a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina in their opening group B clash at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament.
The 23rd edition of the Mundial kicked off with one of the hosts Mexico defeating South Africa 2-0 in the opening match on Thursday. Canada, another host nation, were then in action in the second day but could not replicate Mexico’s result as they were held to a draw.
Bosnia and Herzegovina had qualified by defeating Italy on penalties in the UEFA playoff final and were a force to reckon with. However, veteran forward Edin Dzeko started on the bench due to fitness concerns.
The game started off at with both sides having their fair share of half chances, although the best chance of the opening stages fell to Jonathan David. However, the Juventus forward’s effort was easy to save for the Bosnia goalkeeper.
The European side then took the lead few minutes later after Jovo Lukic, starting in place of Dzeko, headed home after he was found by a clever flick following a set piece.
Canada upped the tempo in search of an equalizer, but Bosnia held off their efforts as the first half ended in a 1-0 result for the European side.
The co-hosts continued their probing in the second half and could have pulled level but Sead Kolasinac produced a stunning goal line clearance with the help of the post to keep his side ahead.
Canada were denied by another goal line clearance for the second time in the game, but got their deserved goal in the 79th minute.
Larin, who had only been in the match for two minutes produced a superb turn and shot to fire his side back into the game.
However, both sides could not get a late winner as the game ended 1-1, leaving both sides on a single point each.
Canada, who grabbed their first point ever in World Cup history, now face 2022 hosts Qatar on Thursday, while Bosnia will be in action against Switzerland in their second group match.
