Plata believes Ecuador now hungrier after stunning Germany victory

Ecuador forward Gonzalo Plata believes his team’s difficult start at the FIFA World Cup 2026 has made them stronger, after their dramatic 2-1 victory over Germany secured qualification for the knockout stage.

The South American side entered the tournament with high expectations but faced early pressure after struggling in their opening matches.

However, Ecuador responded when it mattered most, producing a determined performance against Germany to keep their World Cup dream alive.

For Plata, the victory means more than just three points. The forward believes the challenges Ecuador faced earlier in the competition have created a stronger mentality within the squad and prepared them for the battles ahead.

“We were really looking forward to this before the World Cup began. It feels different today because we struggled so much in the first two matches,” said Plata.

“It’s better this way; it’s a learning experience for us and now we’ll go into the next round even more hungry for glory. This team believes strongly in itself.

“We have 26 players who will give their all for Ecuador. We’ve filled stadiums everywhere, our fans have made us feel at home in every stadium. They deserve this more than anyone. They did their part, they helped us a lot and motivated us.”

The victory over Germany showed Ecuador’s resilience and ability to respond under pressure.

After a difficult opening phase, the team demonstrated character, determination and the confidence needed to compete at the highest level.

Plata highlighted the unity within the squad, insisting that Ecuador’s strength comes from having a group of players ready to fight for each other.

The forward also praised the travelling supporters, whose energy has followed the team throughout the tournament.

The Ecuador camp now enters the knockout stage with renewed confidence and ambition.

Instead of being affected by their early struggles, Plata believes those moments have become valuable lessons that will help the team push further.

With momentum growing and belief rising, Ecuador are aiming to continue their journey deep into the competition.

Plata’s message is clear — the team is not satisfied with simply reaching the next round; they want to make their fans proud and chase something bigger.
