Liverpool seal Champions League victory over Marseille at Velodrome

Liverpool produced a commanding performance to beat Marseille 3-0 in their UEFA Champions League group stage clash at the Orange Velodrome.

The Reds took control early and never looked like relinquishing their advantage, riding waves of momentum backed by clinical attacking play and resolute defending.

Liverpool opened the scoring just before half-time when Dominik Szoboszlai struck from a set-piece, curling a right-footed free-kick into the bottom corner in first-half added time to give the visitors a key lead heading into the break.

The second half saw the momentum convincingly swing in Liverpool’s favour.

Marseille’s beleaguered defence was finally breached again when an own goal from Geronimo Rulli doubled the scoreline midway through the second period, with the Reds continuing to exert pressure and control possession.

The Anfield heavyweights’ third arrived in the final stages, sealing the emphatic win and all but ensuring momentum heading into the final group fixtures.

While the exact scorer and minute vary between sources, the comprehensive nature of the victory was clear for all to see.

Despite being without several regular starters, including defenders Ibrahima Konate and Conor Bradley, the Reds adapted impressively under manager Arne Slot, with returning stars like Mohamed Salah offering both leadership and attacking impetus after his mid-season absence due to AFCON duties.

The Olympians, coached by Roberto De Zerbi, fought valiantly but lacked cutting edge, and their defensive vulnerabilities were ruthlessly exposed by the Merseyside outfit’s balanced approach and tactical discipline throughout the 90 minutes.

This victory not only lifted Liverpool’s spirits after a challenging run of domestic results, but also moved them closer to a Champions League knockout play-offs spot with two matches left in the group phase.

With qualification ambitions firmly back on track, Slot’s men now look to carry this momentum forward as they aim to secure top-tier European progression and build confidence heading into the business stages of the season.
