Herve Renard eyes long-term stay at Tunisia despite World Cup disappointment

Herve Renard has dropped a major hint on his future at Tunisia following their disappointing group stage exit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Carthage Eagles failed to pick up a point from their group and ended up losing all of their three games to become the first African nation to crash out of the tournament.

Renard was appointed after their humiliating 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening clash to replace Sabri Lamouchi, who had overseen that encounter.

Speaking during an interview, Renard reveals that he could end up staying longer than planned if he is convinced by the federation’s plans.

“If they proposed to me a real long-term project, and they ask me to stay with Tunisia, then why not?” Renard revealed.

“I don’t see why I would refuse it, I respect the people with whom there will be conversations, and we can discuss it.

“I came for the World Cup, and I’m now free to choose the best project for my future.”

Despite making a change of manager into the campaign, Tunisia’s fortunes did not change as they suffered heavy defeats in their remaining two matches.

They lost 4-0 to Japan in their second group game, before concluding their campaign against the Netherlands, suffering another 3-1 loss to Tunisia.

Renard was brought in as a short-term fix to finish the World Cup and while that did not go as planned, he would be eyeing an extended stay in the role.

“I was welcomed well in a very difficult context,” Renard added.

“I was aware of how difficult the task would be, but we still learn a lot when we go through difficult-to-manage situations like this. It’s been a beautiful experience.”

Tunisia will now prepare for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers which is set to begin in September, as they hope to make up for their disappointing outing at the World Cup.
