Henry questions Cristiano Ronaldo after Portugal stumble

Cristiano Ronaldo’s latest World Cup appearance has sparked debate after Portugal’s frustrating 1-1 draw with DR Congo, with France and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry questioning the forward’s decision-making during the match.

Ronaldo failed to find the net as Portugal dropped points in Houston, extending the pressure on Roberto Martinez’s side as they look to make a deep run at the tournament.

The biggest talking point came during a Portugal attacking move when Ronaldo appeared to disrupt a promising opportunity involving teammate Bruno Fernandes.

With Fernandes positioned in a dangerous area, Ronaldo moved into the same space, took responsibility for the shot, and fired wide of the post.

Speaking on the FOX Sports panel, Henry highlighted the importance of prioritizing the team’s success over individual moments.

“One thing that’s important, people, please, at home: The team needs to score, not you need to score,” Henry said.

The former France striker explained that Ronaldo’s movement changed the situation and reduced Fernandes’ chance of finding the back of the net.

“Cristiano Ronaldo has been in this situation multiple times. If you make that run here, you make the defender take a decision to go to the six-yard box.

“But because he wants to score, he goes into the path of Bruno Fernandes.

“If he goes into the six-yard box, the defender would have had to follow him, a tap-in for Bruno Fernandes.

“But because he wants to score, he goes into the path of the back pass — you see both players and it’s easier for you to defend.”

Henry added that Ronaldo’s desire to be the decisive figure affected Portugal’s attacking flow.

“That’s my thing: the team needs to score, not you. You saw the reaction of Bruno Fernandes behind…’Let it roll. Make a run, create space so I can tap it in.’ It didn’t happen.”

Fernandes appeared visibly frustrated after the moment, with his reaction suggesting he expected Ronaldo to create space rather than attack the same position.

While other global stars have already made headlines — including Messi’s hat-trick for Argentina and Kylian Mbappe’s goalscoring display for France — Ronaldo’s inability to score against DR Congo has attracted attention.

Portugal will now look to respond when they face Uzbekistan in Houston before their final Group K match against Colombia on June 27.

For Ronaldo, the challenge remains clear: deliver the moments that define his legendary career while keeping Portugal’s team ambitions ahead of individual glory.
